3 Tips for Asparagus Beetle Control in Your Home Vegetable Garden
I love asparagus. You can steam it, grill it, fry it, whatever. The most important, outside all my favorite recipes, I was lucky enough to live in a climate suitable for growing it. It’s not difficult to grow vegetables, but unfortunately for the asparagus they have natural predators called asparagus beetle.
As their name would imply, they attacked the asparagus. Once the asparagus spear from pop through the soil, these beetles will begin to eat them. If that was not bad enough, they will lay their eggs on the spears from which the larvae will emerge and grow into adult beetles that will cause more damage to the plants.
Asparagus beetle is about the size of the ladybug and they come in various colors, especially chocolate. Although, they can be seen as a general in blue, black and other dark colors.
They are not harmful to humans so that the first line of defense is handpicking. This is best done when there is no too much to handle. Simply select and larval beetles away from asparagus and place them in a coffee can filled with syrup, sugar syrup or other sticky material so that when you put it there they could not escape. When you’re done selecting them from the plant, seal the can with a lid, tape closed, and throw it away.
The second way to naturally get rid of the asparagus beetle is to attract other insects are not harmful to humans and your garden, but lethal to the beetle. One is a ladybug insects. Ladybug larvae will eat the asparagus beetle, which will control the beetle population that allows for you to get rid of the adults in ways mentioned in the previous tip. Plant lots of cilantro, dill or fennel, and you are sure to attract all that you need Ladybugs.
